for a while anyway. I have training for the Census tomorrow-Friday. It occurs to me that this temporary gig might mean I can't do all of MediaWest, but the money's too good to pass up. And since I live so close to the con, I'm sure I can make a day or two of it at least.

Helped out all weekend at the first Sunshine schooling show of the year--now I'm completely fired up about riding again, am going to take lessons as soon as I find out my work schedule for the census.

The rider in this video is Robert Dover, who was on the Olympic team several times. The neat thing about this clip is that the commentator explains a lot of the dressage movements, so non-horse people can tell what is going on.

This Baltimore weatherman was NOT HAPPY about the snow moving in!

Something else I found on YouTube. It's an amateur vid, but not a bad one, and it focuses on what I consider the 'real' horse sports--dressage and jumping, with a bit of racing thrown in. There's some really nice riding in some of the clips, too.

I have been looking at cat sites online as I've decided I want a Cornish Rex cat. I found this video which made me laugh like a fool. The cats are Oriental Shorthairs, the user's name is 'saroko' and I assume they're a show cat breeder. I feel sorry for the poor guy who gets pushed off with a squawk around :53, though!

Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test...

The True Fan

OOC is blasphemy, canon is everything.

Once you fall in love with a movie, book or TV series, you are loyal like an old dog. You take fanfiction quite serious and use it as a substitute after the canon ran out.

You are probably a walking dictionary of your favourite fandom and you are picky about what you write and read. The closer to the "real thing" fanfiction is, the more you like it.

You rather explore a character in all depth, see new sides and learn more about them than creating new characters or mix up the situations they are in.

Heh, I'd say this is pretty accurate, what do you think, fellow fen who've read my stuff?

(P.S. whoever wrote this quiz needs to activate their spell/grammar check.)

Library is open after the holidays and I am back to just working 3 days a week or so at the bookstore. This was actually one of the most fun Christmases I've had in a while--everyone that I work with at the bookstore is really nice, they all like animals and some of them are fannish, so I just fit in really well. The customers are nowhere near as mean as they could be at Macy's (hello nasty rich women spending someone's else's money, yeah I'm talking to you), so I've just enjoyed my lighter work load and had a good time.

I have to go to MichiganWorks on the 11th to take a test for the Census--they pay really well and the job would last from the end of Jan. to July, provided I don't get a permanent full time job by then. And if I don't, I can reopen my unemployment claim from Macy's, and they can pay me some more, heh.

Remington lives in a retirement cage by himself now, due to his HED, and he was the reason I had my FN separated into two groups, as he could be a real little troublemaker. So on Christmas I lowered the ramp that closed off the two levels of the FN, and my other seven ratties are now all happily living together, and usually trying to all pile in one overstuffed hammock at once, even though there are many hammocks to choose from. Philip is completely healed from his surgery, once the fur on his neck is finally grown in, you wouldn't even know there was anything wrong with him.

I stopped at the local Speedway station to get a coffee on the way to the library. As I was getting said coffee, a dwarf (or little person, or whatever the preferred term) came in to pay for his gas. He was on one of the pre-paid pumps, so he told the cashier, "Just $10 today--I'm a little short." The whole place just went silent, like one of the E.F. Hutton commercials, for a split second, until the little guy started laughing, at which point everyone realized it was an intentional joke and laughed with him. One of those times when reality is better than fiction! :D

The library is closed Thursday Friday and Saturday, so this is the last time I can get on line until Christmas. I'm meeting my whole family in Frankemuth to eat chicken on Christmas Day, LOL. I think I'll choose not to tell my mom about Phillip's surgery, heh. She's kind of on the fence about the rats--thinks their faces are adorable but "can't get past the tails" and she'd probably have a fit about me running up that big a vet bill for one of the little guys.

My paid LJ account ran out today, and I just took most of my cash out of my credit union acct. so I'd have cash over the holidays. So I'll have to put some back in and then use it to charge next year's account after the library opens back up on Monday, boo. Well, if I renew it within 10 days, all my icons will be replaced and everything, so no biggie.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a great and happy holiday season to all my LJ friends!

I am sitting here in the library, catching up on stuff, when who should call me but one of my managers, asking me if I wanted to work 5-10:30 tonight. Of course I said yes, but the reason for it? One of the other temporary workers never showed up for her shift a couple of days ago, and won't return the managers' calls even though Mary told her she would take the other person (G) off the schedule. Who just walks away from a job like that? It boggles my mind, when so many people don't have jobs at all. Now I'll get some of G's hours, so I came out ahead on that deal.

I was leaving the library yesterday when I dropped my phone on the sidewalk...and when I opened it up, the lower half of the screen was black. It still worked, as in you could talk on it, but it was impossible to see the time or the number of incoming calls. Luckily I found a nice LG phone at Target for $24.99. This morning I got on the Virgin mobile website and switched my account over to the new phone in about two minutes.

So all of you RL friends who have my phone #, it's still the same. I have to reconstruct my contacts list, though, since I couldn't see most of it. [livejournal.com profile] dejla, can you e-mail me your number(s) so I can put them in my phone?

I had to take Phillip to the vet early this morning, he has a tumor under his chin, so I've left him there for surgery and recovery. I work 1:30-5:30, so I'll be able to pick him up before the vet's office closes at 6. Dr. Leis (and I) are hoping it's a nice neat encapsulated tumor, so she can just sort of pop it out. It'll be more difficult if the tumor has grown into blood vessels or such. I always worry about my little guys when they have to have surgery :(

On the way back from the vet's, it started snowing huge flakes. It was really pretty, but the ground is too warm for it to stay, it's still in the 40's in the daytime.

Not my rats, the pic is from the website www.ratbehavior.org, but it was just too funny not to save.

I haven't been typing a lot for the last week or so, because I was yes, run over by a cat. Nitwit, the huge cat I've been fostering for my friend K, sleeps on the left side of my bed every night next to my shoulder. Last Wednesday night I was suddenly woken out of a sound sleep by excruciating pain--as near as I could figure, Nitwit freaked out about something and "peeled out" (as we used to say) on my left hand. He managed to gouge the nail beds on my first and second fingers as well as puncture my index fingernail. So for a couple of days I couldn't even bend my fingers. Plus the fact that bleeding under one's fingernails is excruciatingly painful. I fixed that part by heating up the end of a paperclip and melting holes in my nails to open them up. The swelling's gone down now, so my fingers just look sort of mangled-but-healing, but both my first and second nails will most likely fall off, since they feel sort of...detached.

But both my hands are usable again, which means I can type and cook for Thanksgiving!!

I got a package in the mail from Nielsen ratings, saying that I was chosen as a Nielsen household and to record every TV show I watched for one week.

I haven't watched TV since June, when the FCC went to digital signals. (I have my govt. converter box, I just haven't bothered to hook it all up.)

but I've always had a fascination with hellish weather=thunderstorms, tornadoes, etc. Just for the heck of it I was looking at tornado videos and found this one:

The OKC/Moore tornado had recorded windspeeds of 318 mph--the most powerful wind ever recorded on earth. For anyone on my FL who's never seen a tornado or the damage it can cause, this is some amazing weather footage.

Luckily most tornadoes are not F5s, which is what this one was--but even a little one can ruin your day if it hits your house. :(

The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but really we know nothing about one another. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

I found a $5 bill in my gym bag this morning and I have no idea where it came from.
elegant_bonfire: (parseltongue)
Ok, I have hardly been on line at all lately--right after the holidays I started going to the gym and working out again, and that kind of cuts into my library/computer time. The gym is closed on Sundays, though, and I have the day off.

I was 'inspired' by the fact that right around Christmas I ordered a 40 lb bag of rat food from PetFoodDirect, and just carrying it up the stairs left me huffing and puffing. I used to be able to pick up a bale of hay with one hand, so that didn't make me happy. I had also been eating way too much junk food, which contributed to my general flabbiness. So I changed the way I eat and signed back up at my favorite gym, which is a private gym just across the river from my house. The owner, Murray, is a former professional boxer who runs a boxing training center in one side of the building and a regular gym in the other. It's frequented by 'real people'-- lots of them are older, some are just getting into it and not in real great shape, and no "gym bunnies", whose main concern in life is how they look in spandex lol. I've worked up to doing 45 min. interval training on the elliptical 4-5 days a week and lifting weights 3 days a week. Not only do I feel a thousand times better, but I've also lost 20+ pounds since Christmas. (Eventually that'll stop, though, when my rate of building muscle>flab burning.)

My garden was under water last week, nooo! It drained off in about a day though, and nothing seems the worse for wear. The trilliums are blooming like crazy, my iris is sending up leaves and of course the daylilies were making an appearance as soon as the trilliums did. I have some daffodils that are up but still haven't flowered, but that's most likely because I just planted them last fall and they're a little bit behind. I had to stop at the garden center this morning and get some Roundup, as I have some particularly persistent weeds which are in for a nasty surprise.

Less than a month to MediaWest*Con, yay! I need a vacation to hang out with my friends. I have a reliable pet-sitter to look after all my critters, so if I do take any of the crew along, it may just be Remington and Ellie, my oldies. Depends on how everyone is doing and if the hotel is going to charge a pet deposit for littles in cages or just for dogs and cats.

I have about an hour before the library shuts down, so off to catch up on the rest of the internet!

The little girl in this video is the six-year-old(!) granddaughter of Reiner Klimke, the many-Olympic-medal winning dressage rider. She's doing one-tempe lead changes and extended trot, bareback, on her mom's 25 year old dressage horse.

The little squirt already has a better leg/seat than half of the "trainers" I've seen around here!
elegant_bonfire: (rathearts)
Well. The library will be closed for the next four days, so I will no doubt have a huge FL to catch up on on Monday. o_O It's snowing like mad, I'll probably have to clean off my car when I leave here even though it's only been out there an hour or so. I have to be to work at 6:30 tomorrow morning, blah. I've had a ton of 5:30 and 6:30 am shifts this Christmas, glad tomorrow's the last one!

I went down to Ypsilanti to visit [livejournal.com profile] blackthorn45 and [livejournal.com profile] aphotic_memory last week. Had a good time as usual and ended up coming home with three little mouse girls! There faces are so cute they make me squee every time I look at them. They are Oreo(white w/black spots, including a cute one right on her face), Gingersnap(brindle) and Truffle(black self). The animal head count is now:
7 rats
3 African soft-furred rats
3 mice
1 cat
The babies, Beckett and Godiva, have been out for playtime with Cleo, Cosmo and Emerson every night, they get along wonderfully. I could probably put the littles right in with the other 3, but Godiva is still just teeny and I'm afraid she might try to squeeze through the FN bars and get hurt. **covets a Critter Nation**

I'll be back on line after Christmas, and hopefully will be getting a laptop within the next few weeks, so Merry Christmas to everyone on my friends list!!
